AMD: Southern Islands family expands

The arrival of the Catalyst 11.10 Preview drivers is the opportunity to discover a few new models of graphics cards that AMD would have in its cartons. Several new " Southern Islands " chips are indeed mentioned in these freshly drivers published.

It was already aware of Tahiti, Thames, Lombok, and New Zealand (and their adaptations XT/GL, Pro, the or AIO), as well as Cape Verde and PitCairn. Today, we discover the existence of Wimbledon and Heathrow Chelsea, two GPU - priori destined for the mobile market - yet unknown characteristics. Several new graphics based on these chipsets are planned, in particular, XT and WimbledonPro/LP versions. Heathrow Chelsea will be in turn declined in Heathrow XT and Pro, Chelsea XT and Pro, and Great Wall.

Three versions of Cape Verde should finally see the day (XTX, XT and Pro), while PitCairn should be offered in versions XT and Pro. Brief: "wait and see"...

PowerColor: Southern Islands comes in Q1 2012

Recently showed that Kepler, the new GPU from nVidia, is delayed until early next year. Now it turns out that the HD Radeon 7000 series, code name "Southern Islands", of the other camp pass around that time will come true.

Until recently it was the expectation that AMD are new generation video chips in the last quarter of this year would launch. In an interview with the Turkish site Donamim Haber has Elaine Liao, Director of the Sales Department of PowerColor, however indicated that we Southern Islands in the first quarter of 2012 have to expect. Also noteworthy is his statement that the Gpus by TSMC on the 40 nm process be baked, while earlier posts about a 28 nm process.

To what extent these two communications of Liao are correct, is uncertain since AMD itself the news to the outside world had brought that it sat on the right track to the 28 nm Southern Islands series before the end of this year to launch. There would therefore be simply a miscommunication about.

The rest of the interview is to read on the website of Donanim Haber and goes into the own products of PowerColor and the integration of GPU and CPU in a single chip.

AMD's next generation of video cards is only in the first quarter of 2012
