Marvell today puts on the market its first chips with the G.hn standard. If you have never heard, be aware that this new standard aims to provide an "all terrain" communication protocol which purport to live as a coaxial cable than a simple telephone cable or the power grid. Maximum flow at 1 Gbit/s.
For the user, the G.hn has little interest: it is almost as well today with the Ethernet and CPL. But for hardware designers, the potential is: a single standard and a single chip would be sufficient to make it compatible with any installation equipment. This beautiful promise however happen that if a large group of manufacturers are adopting the G.hn. However, the home is rather mixed.
The G.hn is also shot himself in the foot by not solving the problems of adverse between three standards of equipment existing CPL (standard HomePlug, UPA PLC and HD - PLC). Marvell, for example, which has bought German DS2, ensures interoperability of its chips G.hn with CPL equipment based on DS2 (UPA PLC) technology. Unfortunately most of the CPL adapters marketed today are standard HomePlug, inconsistent.
Another supplier could take advantage of the game this: Sigma Designs. Repurchasing Connexant, one of the promoters of the HomePlug standard, the company is able to design chipsets G.Hn compatible HomePlug.
