GeForce GTX 590 VS Radeon HD 6990: performance of 2012 today!


A few days after the release of the HD 6990, GTX 590 wants to be the response of the Chameleon to AMD Monster. This set is connected to a 384-bit memory controller that breaks down into six units of 64-bit, which take all 256 MB of GDDR5 to reach 1.5 GB GF110 and therefore 2 x 1.5 GB in the case of the GTX 590. At the other end of the memory controller is six partitions ROP capable of generating eight pixels in 32-bit or 48 pixels per cycle in total.


NVIDIA connects the two GF110 of the 590 GTX with its own PCI Express NF200 bridge to multiplexer interface PCIe 2.0 16 lines at the base in 16 lines per GPU.

At the macro level, the GPU is still engraved in 40 nm by TSMC and are about 3 billion transistors on 520 mm2. The GF110 is more complex but also more massive than the Cayman of AMD since the latter did on-board only 2.64 billion transistors in an area of 389 mm2.


The architecture of the GF110 thus was fully preserved, however it cannot not say the same frequency: while the GTX 580 enjoys a GPU to 772 MHz and a memory 1002 MHz, dual-core GTX 590 should respectively only 607 and 853 MHz. Result that performance is not as good as that could have been hoped, even though the relative unimportance: GTX 580 is a map without equivalent, since the HD 6970 is positioned opposite the GTX 570. If HD 6990 displays excellent performance over HD 6970 gain, NVIDIA will therefore may not need as good performance so its 590 GTX is competitive.

NVIDIA launches GeForce GTX 580 M, 570 M

NVIDIA has announced the launch of its new GPU high range for computers laptops, GeForce GTX 570 M and 580 M to replace the GTX 470 M and 485 M. These new graphics cards are based on GPU GF114 (used for the GeForce GTX 560, see this news).

The GTX 580 M is almost identical to the old 485 M except that the GPU frequency going from 575 to 620 MHz and that frequency of calculation units increased from between 1150 and 1240 MHz. Performance should increase by approximately 8%.


The GTX 570 M is more interesting as the GTX 470 M used the former chip GF104, less optimized in thermal report performance/dissipation term. The number of units of calculation passes for 288-336 and frequency increase of 550-575 MHz for the GPU and 1100 and 1150 MHz for calculation units. The frequency of 192-bit GDDR5 memory moves from 1250 to 1500 MHz. Performance should increase by approximately 20% compared to the GTX 470 M.


All usual Nvidia technologies are on supported by these new maps: DirectX 11, OpenGL 4.1, CUDA, 3D Vision, PhysX, SLI and Optimus enables to improve the autonomy implementation eve of the GPU for the benefit of the GPU integrated into the processor.


Manufacturers of mobile computers have already announced models using these new mobile maps, for example, the Alienware M18x (18.4 ", GTX 580 M in SLI) in photo below, Clevo P170HM3 (17.3", GTX 580 M) and MSI GT780R (17.3 ", GTX 570 M).

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 and 275 drivers

After the GeForce GTX 560 it in January, Nvidia announced the launch of a new model, the GeForce GTX 560 (without suffix it).

This GeForce GTX 560 can in fact be seen as a GeForce GTX 460 overclockée as it is based on the GPU GF114, a minor revision of the GF104. Like the GTX 460 card has 336 processors flows and a 256-bit with 1 GB of GDDR5 memory bus. Are frequency of 810 MHz for the GPU and 1002 MHz for the memory against 675/800 Mhz for the GTX 460 of base... but it is already in the trade of the GTX 460 overclockées at close frequencies or greater than the GTX 560.

Our colleagues from the computer press were able to test this new GeForce GTX 560 models. Logically map is between the GeForce GTX 460 1 GB and GTX 560 it and becomes a direct competitor of the Radeon HD 6870 which did not really competitor to date. The GeForce GTX 560 is however not able to do better than the Radeon HD 6870, it displays an identical price (€170 for reference maps) and similar performance, which is a bit disappointing since the AMD card is on the market for several months. Nvidia card however has the advantage of more reasonable than the Radeon HD 6870 noise. Models GTX 560 overclockées as the "DirectCU II TOP" of ASUS display with performance of GeForce GTX 560 Ti (15% of frequencies GPU in addition to the 560 overclockée offset the 14% of additional units of calculation it 560).

In the aftermath, NVIDIA announced its GeForce 275 series drivers. They provide some performance improvements: 6% in Crysis 2 (without AA), 15% in BulletStorm (AA8x) and 8% in Portal 2 (AA4x).  New features are also on the program:

Several manufacturers of graphics cards, the firm to the Chameleon should propose us its new cards as soon as the month of February 2008. Stamped GeForce 9, its new models would be in the same way as the Radeon HD 3800, compatible DirectX10.1, and although obviously incur 4.1 shaders.


All we hope is that the AMD firm with its future chip R700 arrives to return to the Summit and thus compete with Nvidia in terms of performance, in all cases, a beautiful battle in perspective.
