A Samsung monitor supplied with Ethernet

Samsung has announced the NC220, a screen that has the particularity to feed in Ethernet. There is currently very little details on this screen, a priori a diagonal 22 inches (in view of its name), and the only thing on which the Korean firm communicates is its food.

In fact, it uses the standard UPOE, worn by Cisco: the Universal Power Over Ethernet is an enhancement of the PoE classic and allows to provide 60 W to a device, against 30 W usually. With this power, it therefore is more confined to cameras, phones and other Wi - Fi access points and it is possible to feed screens backlit by LED (as this model).

The press release gives little information, but the NC220 is obviously a thin client: USB ports allow to connect a keyboard and a mouse on the screen, and the latter then serves light terminal: the operating system and data are supported by a remote server. This is a trend that existed for many years in it, but current systems finally make viable whole. Cloud computing, an end to the mode currently, is that a new term for something that existed for many years...

Remains to be seen what is needed at the level of the servers for this screen, knowing that an architecture using Cisco equipment is required for the power of the screen.

Cisco refuses to comment and says only that it did not sell cameras or video monitoring solutions. This case tarnishes nevertheless a little more his picture while he was charged last may provide equipment used by the Chinese Government to capture members of the religious movement Falun Gong (cf. "Cisco accused of helping China to block Internet"). It would not however the only American to participate in the operation. HP could sell servers and storage solutions.

The project should cost 2.2 billion (CA. 1.5 billion euros). Only $ 800 million would come from the Government (CA. 500 million euros). The 1.6 billion (EUR 1 billion) still would be from sources that have not been disclosed.
