Samsung Unveils Hybrid a laptop / touch Tablet

A hard drive hybrid 7 mm?

On one of the blogs of Seagate, one of the leaders of the firm wondered on the interest of a hybrid in the ultrabooks hard disk, the "concept" of portable PC launched by Intel recently put in place by many manufacturers like Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Lenovo, etc.

In the second case, the space needed is more important than with a hybrid solution such as Seagate.

Still two problems: first, the passage in 7 mm implies a limitation to the level of capacity. Indeed, 7 mm (used by Archos) hard disks are limited to a single shelf and therefore the best 500 GB currently. Then, the problem of the SSD cache, whether in the hybrid hard disk drives or with the Intel solution, is that it remains a cache: If you out of the preset scenario (and therefore the cache), performance crash and found the same level as a conventional hard drive. With the Momentus XT, Seagate partially solves the problem by using a hard drive at 7,200 rpm, but this is not necessarily possible with a hard disk of 7 mm.

In the end, Seagate should propose a Momentus XT (or equivalent in 5,400 rpm) 7 mm thick which will make pleasure lambda users - who prefer 500 GB of storage space to 128 GB - but is not necessarily something that will bring its letters of nobility to the Ultrabooks. The MacBook Air from Apple, which is clearly the Intel model for the ultrabooks, uses only with SSD and it is clearly one of its big advantages.

LG Working on a Mouse/Scanner Hybrid

LG said that it plans to showcase a mouse/scanner hybrid peripheral next week during IFA 2011. Unfortunately, pricing and availability is still unknown.

Wednesday LG Electronics revealed plans to showcase its new LSM-100 hybrid at the IFA 2011 tradeshow in Berlin which begins September 1. The device is a combination of a mouse and a handheld scanner, allowing the user to simply hold the Smart Scan button on the left side of the mouse, and then swipe over any material (artwork, document etc) on a flat surface. The resulting scanned image can then be saved as PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, PDF, XLS and DOC, or dragged and dropped into the desired application.

"The LSM-100 is also equipped with LG’s Optical Character Recognition technology, which converts scanned text into a Microsoft Word document that can then be edited and manipulated as the user sees fit," the company said. "By eliminating the need to retype text from print media onto the screen, Optical Character Reader saves users a great deal of time."

LG said that the scanner aspect can take in sizes up to A3 (11.7 x 16.5-inches) which is larger than most conventional portable scanners. The LSM-100's scanning technology has also reportedly been upgraded to handle faster pass-over rates, meaning that scanning an A3 sheet won't take forever – it can actually be done "smoothly and quickly."

The specifics about the device's mouse aspects – as in the laser's DPI, response time and overall dimensions – weren't provided, but we expect to hear more about this hybrid gadget next week. Pricing and availability also wasn't given, but in the meantime, check out the video demonstration below. It's a bit dramatic, but it definitely gets the message across as to how it will scan in an A3-sized piece of paper.

Hybrid mice, laser and optical, in Razer

Razer has announced two new versions for the Mamba and the Imperator. The two mice share an interesting innovation: a dual sensor. The Mamba, wireless, is expected in July to €130. Usable with or without wire, she works to 6,400 ppp and supports an acceleration of 50 g.
