The Essential are certified Class 4 and Class 6, and they offer a capacity of 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB. Are cards 8 GB and 16 GB of type Class. These are the fastest SD of the market, with sequential flow of 24 MB/s read, for 21 MB/s write (the Essential will also quickly read, but do not exceed 13 MB/s write).

GeForce GTX 590 VS Radeon HD 6990: performance of 2012 today!


A few days after the release of the HD 6990, GTX 590 wants to be the response of the Chameleon to AMD Monster. According to NVIDIA this map should be launched more than a month ago, but the brand has chosen to not coming in second on the market to refine its product: one of the stated goals is to do better than HD 6990 at the level of noise.


It almost would feel that this objective is the prank as the Fermi architecture is known for a consumer and a very important thermal dissipation. The simple fact to imagine that the firm to the Chameleon could involve two GF110 on a same PCB without a still more audible than the HD 6990 map could pass for an April fool. And yet this is precisely what NVIDIA claims to have succeeded.


However, compromises were necessary: found a fan in the centre of the map as in AMD, and the frequency of the GPU has the stand down from that of the GTX 580 to remain within acceptable thermal limits. Despite this, the GTX 590 is required such as the the most demanding that we have tested all the time!



But the fact is that the map is silent. Really silent. It is even the more discrete bi - GPU card since the ATI Rage Fury Maxx, exit 12 years ago already. Mission accomplished on the noise, therefore, but remains a key question: is that NVIDIA has of surrender in terms of performance to achieve this result?


Two full GF110 under the hood


Our discussions with the trade mark, it is clear that NVIDIA has always wanted to use two full GF110 on GTX 590. As we have seen with the GTX 580, the GF110 employs 4 GPC Graphics Processing Clusters (), each 4 SM (Streaming Multiprocessors). Each SM contains 32 CUDA cores, 4 texture units and 1 Polymorph engine is a total of 512 CUDA Cores, 64 units of textures and 16 Polymorph engines by GPU.



This set is connected to a 384-bit memory controller that breaks down into six units of 64-bit, which take all 256 MB of GDDR5 to reach 1.5 GB GF110 and therefore 2 x 1.5 GB in the case of the GTX 590. At the other end of the memory controller is six partitions ROP capable of generating eight pixels in 32-bit or 48 pixels per cycle in total.


NVIDIA connects the two GF110 of the 590 GTX with its own PCI Express NF200 bridge to multiplexer interface PCIe 2.0 16 lines at the base in 16 lines per GPU.

At the macro level, the GPU is still engraved in 40 nm by TSMC and are about 3 billion transistors on 520 mm2. The GF110 is more complex but also more massive than the Cayman of AMD since the latter did on-board only 2.64 billion transistors in an area of 389 mm2.


The architecture of the GF110 thus was fully preserved, however it cannot not say the same frequency: while the GTX 580 enjoys a GPU to 772 MHz and a memory 1002 MHz, dual-core GTX 590 should respectively only 607 and 853 MHz. Result that performance is not as good as that could have been hoped, even though the relative unimportance: GTX 580 is a map without equivalent, since the HD 6970 is positioned opposite the GTX 570. If HD 6990 displays excellent performance over HD 6970 gain, NVIDIA will therefore may not need as good performance so its 590 GTX is competitive.

While last year’s systems often focused on the expandability of high-end platforms, those platforms (largely based on Intel's X58 Express chipset) no longer support the fastest CPUs for our applications. Even enthusiasts must live with the reality that most programs can use no more than four CPU cores, and the fastest four-core processors have used decidedly mainstream chipsets since January. Those are the parts on which our most recent $2000 builds have centered.

Intel’s compelling upgrade for its mainstream processor interface turned the market on its head by adding ultra-fast video transcoding that could not be matched even by today’s fastest discrete GPUs, let alone an ultra-expensive six-core CPU. We've already seen what Quick Sync can do. With that said, none of the tests in our System Builder Marathon suite are optimized to exploit it; perhaps that's something we'll change going into next quarter's comparison. The real question is: should we even bother to upgrade?

Of course, the answer is yes. We've shown via extensive testing that Intel's Z68 Express platform loses nothing by way of overclocking or performance compared to the P67-based boards previously included in this series. These motherboards do cost a little more, which means today’s system takes a small hit in the value calculations, especially given that our transcoding-oriented benchmarks are processor-bound, and not able to enjoy the speed-up enabled through Quick Sync. Still, we had to follow our hearts on this one and think of what we’d build if these were our own machines. At the end of the day, Z68's additional functionality is really worthwhile.

Oh yes, and we ditched the often-favored Antec Three Hundred Illusion for something with a little more flash and twice the cost. With the same CPU, GPUs, and SSDs carried over from our most recent $2000 build, we're leaning hard on our partner's Newegg's recent price drops to retain the high-end value score of our former build.

Yet, value can’t completely be quantified by our scoring system. For example, how would a real-world user feel about having only 128 GB of storage? We added a 1 TB drive for that, along with a BD-RE for backups. This month’s disc burner is also cheaper than that of our previous build, which helps to offset the cost of that gorgeous case. Many of our readers have, after all, voiced concern that one of the things they value is the look on their friends’ faces when they show off their latest creation!

Gory Gaming: Bulletstorm Performance Analyzed

Although the game had significant performance issues when it was released, Bulletstorm now benefits from the latest graphics drivers and a patch from its developers. Now is the perfect time to see what kind of hardware this game requires for smooth play.

Bulletstorm is a title we were eager to try for a number of reasons. The viral marketing approach, with a Halo-mocking trailer and demo that pokes fun at the Call of Duty series, definitely provided a few laughs. The ultra-violent “Skillshot” system looked intriguing. We were also interested in testing the newest iteration of Epic’s Unreal 3 engine. All told, that was enough motivation for us to take an in-depth look at the game and its performance.

MSI provided a variety of graphics cards from both AMD and Nvidia for our tests in order to demonstrate what kind of frame rates you can expect to get from Bulletstorm across a wide spectrum of hardware. We're looking at both single-card and SLI/CrossFire performance, too. But before digging into the data, let’s go over the game for folks who aren’t familiar with it.

Bulletstorm might be best described as shoot 'em up-style with a furious pace and a delinquent sense of humor. Most enemies are outclassed by such a large margin that you’re more concerned with the elegance of your kills than survival. Dispatching foes in a creative fashion may be recognized as a Skillshot. The rarer and more creative the Skillshot, the more points are awarded. These points can be traded for enhancements that often improve your ability to perform increasingly impressive Skillshots, and the cycle continues.

You unlock a number of weapons as the game progresses, but shooting is often less effective than kicking or yanking (with boots or a wrist-mounted leash, respectively), both of which create a temporary anti-gravity field that immobilizes your victim in the air for a short time.

The game might sound grim, but it's fully immersed in Duke Nukem-esque tongue-in-cheek flair and gruesome (but cartoony) violence. Your avatar is a tough mercenary named Grayson Hunt, whose dialogue could easily be read by Ash from Army Of Darkness. The language is vulgar and deserves the Mature rating, but if you’re in the mood for juvenile potty humor, it’ll steal a smirk from you once in a while. Just don’t expect anything in the way of puzzles or intellectual progression. The game is on obvious rails. There is no jump button, and you can’t fall off cliffs even if you try. Your biggest hurdle will be to figure out the next thing you’re supposed to shoot at.

A game that revels in juvenile laughs and nonstop action can be a guilty pleasure, but this particular approach also leads to annoying situations. For instance, if you’re too involved with a specific enemy you might not notice the prompt telling you to move on to another vital target, and if you’re a bit slow on the uptake, the game rewards you with a quick, scripted death sequence. The Dragon’s Lair-style, do-the-right-thing-immediately-or-die mechanism doesn’t appeal to me, but some people might appreciate the way it breaks up the missions.

Other than that, I don’t have a lot to complain about. If you crave an entertaining diversion with breakneck action, crude jokes, cartoon gore, and some very nice visuals, I’m not sure you’ll find anything that fits the bill better than Bulletstorm.
