Western Digital: a centre of R & D for SSD at Taiwan

Western Digital continues to invest on the SSD. Still not to the general public, but perhaps soon...

Western Digital SiliconDrive IIIIf Western Digital seems to begin to see the end of the tunnel in Thailand for the production of hard drives, the constructor think to start on the growing market of disks to flash for the public memory. Indeed, we learn that Western Digital is about to set up a centre of R & D in Hsinchu (Taiwan) of 50 specialists whose work will be entirely devoted to the development of DSS.

Currently, Western Digital has already a centre of R & D of SSD in his headquarters in the United States with approximately 200 engineers, but the creation of this new unit of research and development demonstrated the willingness of the manufacturer to accelerate its deployment in the carrier market. However, the R & D of Hsinchu Department will be operational before ps about 1 year. If Western Digital is implementing this Department, it is also so if occupy the DSS of Hitachi GST, recently purchased, and the DSS appear on the market early 2012.

Western Digital explains that the selling prices of SSDS is currently the main brake on mass-market development, well that more and more products allow SSD to enter the market (such as the arrival of the ultrabooks). It is therefore too early to see Western Digital offer SSD to the grand public, but things continue to be put in place in this sense. Reminder, Western Digital has since mid-2009 of the DSS to professionals.

Zalman Intel + SandForce SSD

Zalman presents a new series of SSD-based Intel memory and SandForce controller.

Korean Zalman, already present on the markets of cooling, power supplies, enclosures and accessories for PC, recently started the SSD and it completes its range with the "F" series flash drives. Not so private photos on Facebook

This is what add to the controversy of private data on social networks in General, and Facebook in particular...

Motion down combat in Facebook yesterday, after a user has unveiled a fault which - via a simple handling - gave access to the photos private members. Result, Facebook quickly reacted and blocked this function, before putting in place an update correcting the problem. Handling in question was actually extremely simple.

It was in fact sufficient to use the function to report an inappropriate photo content. Once the notification is sent, Facebook proposed view of other photographs in the series to see if they also violate the rules. Bug, these images proposed by the system could contain private or restricted rights photos. ZDnet, highly reactive, operated this fault to view photos on the profile of Mark Zuckerberg himself protected.

Mark Zuckerberg Facebook

A photo of Mark Zuckerberg made accessible via this bug

"We discovered a bug in one of our flow of reports allowing people to report cases of inappropriate content." "The bug was caused by a recent amendment to the code" said Facebook which blocked the function before repair the problem. Facebook is reassuring in explaining that only a small number of photos were thus accessible. This is, in any case, is not likely to improve the image of Facebook in terms of protection of private data.

Free Mobile launched on 17 December, with a free SIM for Free subscribers?

The Free mobile telephony offer could be available in December 17, according to a source well informed the world of telecoms.

This is Pierre-Henri de Menthon, Executive Director of writing Challenges, that reveal information long awaited by millions of people in France for months on his blog: "According to my informant, Free will to the attack before Christmas, by sending from 17 to 19 December a letter to its customers with a small gift." "It is a SIM card with a duration of free time, no doubt a month". This would allow Free capture a maximum of potential customers, to test its network and its infrastructure before launching its commercial offers early 2012.

Free will to the attack before Christmas, by sending a SIM card with a time of free appeal to customers

This information also plausible it is nevertheless a rumour, because the actual launch date is known to Xavier Niel, patron of Free, and two or three of his closest collaborators. The secret is also well guarded as the formula for Coca-Cola. But if this info is true, three historical operators can shake (they have already started a few months to respond to this "phantom menace"), millions of users of Freebox potentially then escape. More that a few days to wait to finally have the end of history and perhaps receive a letter from Santa with a little surprise inside plastic, watch your mailbox (real not the virtual)...

Data.gouv.fr is open! The Open Data to the French...

Published on 06 December 2011, by Denis Leclercq - updated 06 December 2011 to 16 h - in Internet - key words: Open Data

French Open Data Portal is open, but there is still work to improve the documents and move the departments for the restitution of all the public documents.

The opening of public data was announced with great fanfare at the last G8 Summit by the President of the United States. The France follows the movement and opens his own website dedicated to the Open Data: data.gouv.fr.

data.gouv.fr_portail_open_data

For visitors, a small phrase is significant: "Strengthen the transparency of the action of the State improves the functioning and quality of service to users". It is the mission of this portal providing 352.000 documents from all departments, administrative authorities (CSA, ARCEP, etc), local communities and other public corporations such as the rail network of France. But most of these documents are in proprietary format, not complying really the image that can have "open" such as CSV or XML, data, even if Microsoft extensions documents are now supported without too many problems on all operating systems existing.

Damage, this portal does not reference the Official Journal documents or those of public procurement which are absent subscribers. It is disturbing for the first, which publishes laws, but especially for the second, because a bit of transparency on the contracts entered into by the State, regions, departments, municipalities, local and territorial authorities would have been a major step forward. However, this portal provides free access different powers and budget, revenue and expenditure of the State.

For the moment, data.gouv.fr is still in the phase of test, but for a first jet, this portal is a mine of information and will allow French citizens to follow the actions carried out by the public authorities, our elected officials or understand and analyze documents from the past to better write the future.

Windows 8: finally presented Store and the beta for February

Microsoft has just reveal that the public beta of Windows 8 happen in February, at the same time as that of the Windows Store, his shop applications finally detailed.

If some analysts are already pessimistic about the commercial future of Windows 8, it was time for Microsoft to present the Store Windows that will be integrated into the OS and will allow the editor to follow the trend of online shops by positioning itself on the new business-model of the application in due form. On a dedicated Press Conference, Microsoft announced the beginnings of the Store Windows in February 2012, in the launch of the public beta of the new operating system. This will give (pending the final output of the system at a date still unknown) to provide a period of testing at the Store Windows, so everything is ready on day J. During this beta, only free applications from developers invited by the firm will be accepted and available. This has nothing shocking, knowing that remains to Microsoft no doubt a lot of things to adjust to be able to open his Store Windows developers from around the world.

Windows Store (1)      Windows Store (3)

Work on the aspect of this platform for the sale of applications, but also on the commercial pan. As a reminder that Microsoft wishes to stand out of Apple and its policy of income distribution to 70/30 with developers. Thus, if Microsoft well affect 30% of revenue on sales of applications, this share drops to 20% for any application from the bar of the $25,000 in sales. Also, if business Apple as special must pay $ 99 license fees, Microsoft individuals pay only $ 50 for able to publish their creations on Store Windows, business $ 99. In this connection, Antoine Leblond - loaded Windows Web services - has not hesitated to go small colourful remark which is always fly: "Microsoft will provide a greater share of the Apple", he said developers.

"A greater share of the Apple"

Windows Store (2)

Comparisons with the App Store for Apple Mac are necessarily many presentations of the Store Windows by Microsoft. The firm of Redmond for example also insisted on the fact that its policy of validation would be less restrictive. Developers will have such access to the tools used by Microsoft services, allowing them to test themselves in advance if their application is likely to be rejected. For more transparency.

Other information that will not fail to be of interest to developers, it will be possible to use the system of payment of their choice within their applications. Also, they can if they wish a demo system that will allow users to download and try the full version of an application, but limited in time. What test under the best conditions before purchasing. A model that has already been proven. Finally, Microsoft made foot to the press stating that it will be possible to put in place systems of subscriptions not subject to a regular commission as is the case at Apple. Businesses, they should be able to deploy their own applications without going through the Store on their internal networks.

Well beautiful effects of announcement, check when the Store Windows is available. Also, details are expected on the availability of applications for the x 86 version of Windows 8 on this Store Windows. Because the presentation was focused on interface Metro, first known to Windows 8 under ARM tablets. Should not be that these announcements drown the other important information at this Conference: the public beta of Windows 8 will be launched next February. The appointment is made.

The first 128 Gb NAND chip...

Intel and Micron will start production of small chips of 16 GB for the beginning of next year.

imft_20nm_128gb_02

The Intel/Micron couple works well. You talked yesterday about the work that they are together on the cubic hybrid memory. Today, they return to show us the first chip NAND of 128 Gb, or 16 GB, MLC engraved 20 nm.

To complete the picture, two casters have complied with the standard ONFI 3.0, a specifically studied for the NAND interface which supports the order of 400 MB/s transfers announced in March 2011,. requiring less connecteusr, which makes the task of designing the circuits between the simpler chips. 16 GB chips can therefore be used in upcoming smartphones, tablets and even SSD which will arrive soon.

Coming to paste as much space of storage in a small chip, Intel and Micron have used a new structure to work around the current constraints in integrating new batteries of bridge between the cells. IMFT, Im Flash Technology, the joint-venture of Intel and Micron NAND, will propose models of test of these chips next January and could launch mass production for the middle of next year. In the meantime, the IMFT increases the rate of production of the 8 GB chips also engraved 20 nm.
