The AC700, the Chromebook of Acer, pushed

The AC700, the Chromebook of Acer, would be delayed to an unknown date, while he is in pre-order from June 15 and was expected June 24. A hard blow to the Google operating system: the only machine that should be offered to launch is a Samsung model.

Remember that the Chromebook use the operating system of Google, Chrome OS, and that the machine is dedicated to the cloud. Specifically, the local storage capacity is very low (16 GB) and the machine is dependent on an Internet connection. One of the problems of the Acer model is the price: the AC700 is proposed $380 to the States United with very (too) classical for the award features: 11 inch screen 1,366 x 768, Atom N570 (dual core), 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of SSD. Announced autonomy is correct, 6.5 hours, and the integration of the 3 G modem is interesting, but more complete netbooks under Windows 7 exist, with a storage capacity more in line with the needs of users.

Hope for Google as Acer leaves and quickly his machine...

THFR tests an interfaced SSD in... POWA!

The SSD that we tested is an OWC Mercury Pro Legacy, an SSD uses a SandForce SF-1222 controller but is PATA interface. With a capacity of 120 GB, it is a pretty classic model outside its interface. Our test model is in the format 2.5-inch PATA 44 pins connector, but 3.5 inch PATA 40 pins connector versions exist. It uses 41 nm MLC memory and a portion of memory is reserved for the controller, as on the majority of models based on this controller. Booking here is 7% and our 120 GB model thus actually contains 128 flash memory Gio. More...

With a limited to 100 MB/s interface, a PATA SSD comes to jam for pigs!

NetBook Asus EEE PC 1215P at €279 but not with us...

In Italy, the Asus EEE PC 1215P (BLK001U) is sold to €279 while the machine is at €449 in our regions. The difference comes from the OS. The proposed on the Italian model is sold with Ubuntu while the marketed in France and Belgium is delivered with Windows 7 family Premium. The rest of the equipment is similar: Atom N570 Dual Core 64-bit with GMA 3150, 2 GB of DDR3 PC 10600, 320 GB of disk, 12-inch 1366 x 768, Wifi N, webcam, etc. If the price difference is significant, one wonders however if current netbooks are not too expensive compared to the notebook entry (like the Thinkpad Edge under FreeDos proposed to €249 there are few). Finally, more recently, the ticket of entry for a 15-inch Windows laptop fell below €300...

K, the most powerful computer in the world

Small victory for the Japan: the land of the rising sun took over first place in the ranking of supercomputers to China. Built by Fujitsu for the RIKEN Advanced Institute for Computational Science (AICS) in Kobe, K Computer offers a computing power of 8 petaflop (8 million billion operations per second floating-point), 3 times higher than that of Tianhe 1 - Chinese A, the previous world champion.

The measured power is very close to the theoretical power of K Computer (8.77 PFlops) which is unusual for a supercomputer. Unlike a recent trend, K Computer does not appeal to hearts GPU to accelerate treatment and is based entirely on a CPU. Fujitsu has used its home, the SPARC64 VIIIfx with eight hearts processor and running at 2 GHz. 68 544 processors form K Computer, for a total of 548 352 hearts. The monster requires 9.9 MW of electrical power, a new record also. Here its commissioning official in 2012, K should still grow (80,000 CPU) to exceed the symbolic cap of 10 PFlops.

Supercomputers crossed another cap as the top 10 in the world exceed all the petaflop. The France class in ninth position with the Tera 100 built by Bull for the CEA, which offers 1.05 PFlops, consumes 4.6 MW.
